Space and body E-mail
How do we situate our bodies in space? How does space determine the way our bodies look and feel? What is perception? And how can art alter the way we perceive the world? Key questions which have underpinned the work of numerous artists, and which force us to take a more perceptive look at our surroundings, and ourselves. Richard Serra has referred to his work's vocation to reconfigure the space around us, while at the same time altering our perceptions of our own bodies. The sensual, physical discovery of a work of art allows each of us to experience a unique encounter. This physical sensation takes us beyond the straightforward visual contemplation of the work, beyond merely seeing, to feeling, walking within the space of the work, and experiencing it as a whole. How do Richard Serra's sculptures succeed in creating space? And how is our physical awareness of ourselves altered as a result?
