Architecture and sculpture E-mail
Richard Serra offers us the experience of space. We move within in his works, we inhabit them. But should his work be seen as architecture? For the artist, the boundary between the two is clearly drawn: while architecture serves a clear purpose, sculpture is essentially 'pointless' but artistically necessary. Richard Serra is a sculptor. The space generated by his works is without function. Are his works a source of inspiration for architects? What is the artist's own  view? Serra may not see his sculptures as works of architecture, but they clearly engage in a dialogue with their architectural surroundings. How is this dialogue expressed? What is said in the dialogue between architecture and sculpture? How do we pass from an abstract form to a form that 'makes sense'? And should we look for meaning in Richard Serra's work?
