Creating, manufacturing E-mail
Richard Serra's methods can seem disconcerting. He is a sculptor, yet he does not 'sculpt' his works as others do, using conventional tools. Richard Serra conceives works of sculpture whose role is not to stand as objects of contemplation, but to function as spatial experiences, reconfiguring the space within and around them. The process of manufacturing the steel sheets is not a creative act in itself, but it remains the moment at which the artist's concept can push back the habitual limits of the technologies involved. For Richard Serra, this is an essential process. Each of his works corresponds to the list of verbs (rolling, pressing, cutting, folding etc.) he wrote in 1967, and which has served a kind of artistic programme or manifesto for his work ever since. His sculptures are the embodiment of these  active verbs, their manifestation in three dimensions.
