Alfred Pacquement studied History of Art at the University of Paris, and joined the Centre National d’Art Contemporain as a chargé de missions. He curated his first exhibitions in this role, and was also appointed as curator of the 7th Paris Biennale (1971). In 1972 he was the curator of the exhibition 72 – Twelve years of contemporary art in France.
He subsequently joined the team at the Centre Georges Pompidou, becoming curator of contemporary art at the Musée National d’Art Moderne from 1974 to 1987. He served as director of the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume from 1990 to 1993, and as director of visual arts for the Ministry of Culture and Communication from 1993 to 1996. In 1996, he became director of the  Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In September 2000 he was appointed as director of the Musée National d’Art Moderne at the Centre Georges Pompidou.

The curator of numerous exhibitions in France and around the world, Alfred Pacquement is also a leading critic and art historian. His published works include studies of Frank Stella, Richard Serra, Henri Michaux and Claude Viallat, together with numerous catalogue prefaces and essays on French contemporary art.
